King Protea is a shrub with a flower that looks like it belongs in a fairytale. The large, globe-shaped buds resembled giant artichokes before they open. The Latin name, Protea Cynaroides, is reminiscent of the Greek sea-god, Proteus, who was known to change shapes, suggesting the diversity found in this unique bloom. The Protea is the national flower of South Africa It is widely distributed in the south-western and southern parts of of the fynbos region of South Africa. Marguerite was inspired to capture the beauty of this indigenous flower after receiving a bouquet of them for her birthday from her parents (which has become an annual tradition).
